New Poll Finds Majority of Colorado Voters Support a Fair Tax

Opinion research shows broad support for fair tax ballot measure, overwhelming bipartisan support for taxing incomes above $250,000 instead of budget cuts

DENVER, CO — New public opinion polling of Colorado voters released today shows broad support of 69% among likely November 2020 voters for a fair tax system. The ballot measure would, if passed, cut taxes for 95% of Coloradans, increase tax rates for incomes above $250,000, and provide badly needed revenue for communities threatened by budget cuts created by COVID-19. A similar poll question asked in February prior to the pandemic found 61% support a fair tax system, indicating a growth in support due to the threat of severe cuts.

According to the poll, which was conducted in early May by Colorado-based pollster Chris Keating of Keating Research, Colorado voters support the measure as a way to close the state’s impending multi-billion-dollar budget deficit. The fair tax system has the support of large majorities of Colorado voters across party lines, genders, ages, income levels, and geographic regions.

When asked about the specific ballot question, support for the measure stays strong, with 56% of voters indicating they would support the measure in November.

“This poll shows Coloradans of all walks of life agree a fair tax system is the right way to respond to the COVID-19 crisis,” says Abby Vining of the Fair Tax Colorado campaign. “Giving 95% of Coloradans much-needed relief in the form of a tax cut while simultaneously protecting our communities from budget cuts is something that can bring our state together and help us come back stronger.”

A note on methodology: This polling data is based on an online poll of 600 likely November 2020 voters statewide in Colorado conducted by Keating Research from May 1-3, 2020. For this sample of 600 interviews the worst-case margin of error at the 95% level is plus or minus 4.0%.
